RARE EARTH MAGNETS

The rare earth magnets constituting rare elements developed more than 30 years ago from earth molded into strong magnets. It is the most powerful magnet, even stronger than commonly found alnico and ferrite magnets. Samarium-cobalt and the neodymium are the two types of rare earth magnets found. Each of them has different uses and strengths are also variable.

The two kinds of rare earth magnet, Neodymium and Samarium-cobalt and the neodymium are more powerful than all the other kinds of magnets. The neodymium magnets are more widely used than Samarium magnets as they are brittle, expensive and have low magnetic field. Though, Samarium-cobalt magnets are preferred in high temperature condition operations than the neodymium.

Despite being cheap, strong, and highest magnetic attraction, the neodymium magnets which contain neodymium, boron, and iron, it undergoes corrosion easily and also cannot persist at high temperatures. To avoid this undergoing of corrosion, these magnets are layered with nickel, zinc, or gold for shielding it.

Rare earth magnets can also be dangerous to our body, even if it is only a few centimeters. Therefore, they should be handled with high care and proper safe measures should be taken while handling it. It should be taken care that no body part becomes clutched between magnets as these magnets exert power which can cause injury. Also, it should not come in contact with a metal surface while handling even one magnet. These magnets are also capable of delete many type of media which engage magnetic fields, even credit and debit cards, and also hard disks of computer systems. Due to its attracting power, magnets attract each other when come close to one another and hit each other with devastating velocity which destroys the magnets and become hazardous to things around it.

These rare earth magnets are used widely in variety of devices and have many applications in the real world. Hard Disk and audio speakers being the most common usage of it, they can be seen in brakes of fishing reels, dynamos, and also the motors of cordless power equipment. It is also used for lifting and propelling of trains across train tracks by hovering it with the help of these rare earth magnets. Its other common uses include stop motion in roller coasters, the pickups attached on violins, MRI machines, bass as well as electric guitars for capturing and converting of vibrations.

Rare earth magnets have now turned out to be an essential feature of modern machinery, tools and equipments.  The power of these magnets is incomparable and can be used for a variety of commercial as well as scientific industry. Like most useful resources, this resource also comes with a number of risks which can be avoided if operated carefully. If best and safely used, these are considered to be one of the best developments in the field of science of the past 40 years.
